What a grand idea. I like it.
How long would an average job last? An hour? Two? Four? I’d charge that as my base, and then have an hourly fee for going over to take care of standard computer tech type stuff.
The case could be ‘advertised’ simply, I think, via the statements, “how safe is your data? If you don’t want to worry about it any longer, have Paul take care of it for $X a month” or something like that. It’s personal.
You may be able to carry your own external burner and software tools for the backups. Or maybe you carry your own drive, back up the data, and then blast it up to DreamHost or S3. Or maybe you just have some scripts that blast the data straight from the comptuer to DreamHost or S3 ;-)
This is something that could build up slowly, and much of your new business may come through referral. Again, I think it’s a pretty cool idea.
Good thoughts. The time could be anything from an hour to four or more, depending on the level of entropy ;-)
The external burner is a given: that and a cakebox of discs are all the tools that would be needed (OK, perhaps a diag or boot disc if things are way whacked). S3? I looked at that but it was a bit opaque (or perhaps I was obtuse). I really wanted to see something like a drive/network address I could write to but there was all this talk of buckets. Time to look again? Any wrappers you can think of (ruby/python, etc) that make it more easily manageable?
I’ll ponder it some more this weekend, and check out the Sunday Fry’s ad for equipment costs ;-)
